Do You Need to Fit a Soakwell on Your Land?

by Jimmy Soto

Stormwater runoff can be a significant problem for property owners. If water runoff is allowed to continue without intervention, it rarely takes long before soil erosion begins, and if left untreated, there will eventually be simply barren rock left in the landscape. Instead of allowing stormwater runoff to continue unchecked, it is best to take action and install soakwells or similar devices to control the way that water is distributed across your property.

What are soakwells?

Although soakwells come in a range of designs, the basic idea is simple. Soakwells are underground tanks that are intended to collect stormwater rather than allow it to run across the land. The water is directed into the tank via an inlet pipe before being slowly released into the ground over time rather than being allowed to flow across the surface of the ground with force. If you own a home without a soakwell, then it is best to have one fitted without delay. If allowed to continue, the effects of soil erosion will become apparent not just on the surface of the ground but also in signs such as distorted paving as the supporting ground is washed away.

What size should your soakwells be?

To determine the size of soakwells that will be needed on your property, your installer will need to analyse your soil to see how well it can conduct water. Once the size of the soakwell has been decided, you can find a suitable location for it to be buried. You won't want the soakwell placed too close to the foundations of your property, and you will also want to make certain that it can be installed at a sufficient depth, normally you will want at least 200mm of soil covering the top of the soakwell.

Fitting your soakwells

Installing soakwells is not usually a task which can be left to the homeowner. Fitting a correctly operating soakwell is a job for qualified experts. Not only will you probably have to hire construction equipment to prepare a hole for your soakwell but you will also need expert advice on both the size and location of your soakwell. Most local authorities require you to contain water runoff within your own property boundaries, and without expert planning, it is difficult to determine how to do that. Talk to your local supplier today to identify the most suitable soakwell solution for your property.
